Odyssey Opera presents Honneger's "Jeanne d'Arc au Bûcher"

Arthur Honegger's Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake) is a large-scale dramatic production and, undoubtedly, the French-born Swiss composer’s most famous work. It has recently enjoyed renewed international interest thanks to global productions featuring popular French actress Marion Cotillard. The drama takes place during the heroine’s last minutes on the stake, with flashbacks to her trial and younger days. Honegger entitled his work a "dramatic oratorio", adding speaking roles and actors. The work is a dramatic mix of Honegger’s eclectic score, and sung and spoken libretto by poet and playwright Paul Claudel. Odyssey Opera’s performance will feature the voices of the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum.

Odyssey Opera presents Dello Joio's "The Trial at Rouen"

In 1950 Boston based Pulitzer Prize winning composer Norman Dello Joio premiered his first opera The Triumph of Saint Joan. Unhappy with the results he withdrew the work. Still fascinated with the subject he was commissioned by the NBC Television Opera Theatre to produce an original 75-minute opera for television. The resulting work in two acts, The Trial at Rouen, premiered on April 8, 1956, on NBC. In collaboration with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Odyssey Opera’s performance marks the first time The Trial at Rouen will be performed off screen and on stage in front of a live audience. The most condensed of all the operas of our season, it focuses on the period of the imprisonment and trial of Joan. The concert will open with Dello Joio’s most popular work The Triumph of Saint Joan Symphony a purely orchestral work based on the material from his first Joan of Arc opera.

Odyssey Opera presents Donizetti's "L'assedio di Calais"

Donizetti’s L’assedio di Calais (The Siege of Calais) focuses on the bleak wartime and tales of courage and self-sacrifice in Edward the III’s year-long Siege of Calais during the Hundred Years’ War. This rarely-heard Italian bel canto work has undeservedly been absent from the operatic stage but recent revivals have shown it to be a work of great beauty and poetry. Salvatore Cammarano wrote the Italian libretto, which has been described as “…a remarkable libretto, the closest Cammarano ever got to real poetry, particularly in his description of the embattled city and the heartfelt pride of its citizens". Ms. Dietrich appears in the ensemble.
